Simple, Timeless Ways to Dress for the Beach - The New York Times

On a hot beach, staying cool is more important than looking put together — so it’s important to dress in a way that feels, above all else, easy. But these retro-inspired pieces — bikinis, cover-ups, sandals and sunglasses — will help you look good without sacrificing function. Here, a selection of our favorite summer pieces for the last month of the season, along with tips for how to wear them.

A lightweight ankle-length dress is a dependable summer staple to keep you cool and protected from the sun. This one, by Lisa Marie Fernandez, in a breathable cotton and with an oversize shape, is perfect for even the hottest days — and can work well into the evening.

A thin fringed towel, of the kind found at Turkish hammams, not only dries quickly but can also double as a colorful pareu or scarf. If you want something more classic, choose a style with faded pastel or earth-tone stripes.

Worn with a simple swimsuit or a white linen button-down, layered necklaces, whether a few slender chains or a cluster of chunky pendants, are an easy way to feel more polished on the beach.

Introduced in 1968, the Dr. Scholl’s “exercise” sandal, a contoured wooden clog with a single leather strap, is now seeing a resurgence. Several brands offered their own version of the classic shoe this season, including Gucci, which swapped out the plain metal buckle for a ’70s-inspired logo.

When the heat makes you want to dress as minimally as possible, colorful nails can pull together even the simplest outfit. This vermilion shade from Chanel is a perfectly retro, creamy orange-red.

Perhaps no accessory conjures summer vacations as readily as a straw basket. While several versions proliferated the runways this season, this Hermès carryall, with a supple leather trim, feels especially versatile: It’s spacious enough to hold a towel and sunscreen but smart enough for the city, too.

With a vintage shape and a thick frame that keeps them from feeling costumey, these Celine sunglasses are a modern take on a timeless staple — and the white contrasts beautifully with sun-kissed skin.
