The traveling dress - Eureka Times-Standard

One dress and 15 photographers came together recently to make the Humboldt Traveling Dress project come to fruition.

“I saw an article in a photography group about photographers across the United States who did a similar project and mailed the dress to one another and thought that since there are so many incredibly talented local photographers it would be fun to do something similar here,” said project founder Kimberly Sweet of The Studio by Kimberly Ann.

“The idea of community over competition is really strong between our local photographers and I thought this would be a really fun way to showcase that,” said Sweet, who posted a link to the original story that inspired her in a local photography group on Facebook and asked if anyone would be interested in participating.

“Everyone who expressed interest was added to a group chat where we discussed the details,” she said. “Each participant got to choose one week to have the dress and, during that week, they could shoot the dress however they wanted to — the only rule was that they passed the dress on to the next participant in the same condition it was in when they received it.”

The dress chosen for the project is from Leah Marie Couture, Sweet said.

“It just so happened that three of us owned the same dress … so we were able to have more flexibility with scheduling,” she said. “The dress is adjustable and can fit a wide range of sizes, which made it ideal for a project like this.”

The participating photographers and/or studios are Jessica Frint Photography, Darci Dalton Photography, Harmony Safier Photography, Catherine Wilkes Photography, Sacred Images, Amanda Lankila Photography, Tellez Photography, Rendy Marie Photography, Juliana Dean Photography, Ashley Bolton Photography,
Amber Ferriman Photography, Kathleen Amelia — Photographer, Julie Branson Photography, Katie Anne Photography and The Studio by Kimberly Ann, which is based in Eureka.

“I am a local boudoir photographer,” Sweet said. “My goal with each and every session is to empower women and have them leave my studio feeling braver, stronger, more confident and worthy than they did when they walked in. I loved collaborating with other female business owners on this project — it filled my cup right up to the top.”

Julie Branson of Arcata said she was excited to have an opportunity to connect with some of the other photographers in the area as well.

“It seemed like a fun, creative challenge, and I love that it was put forward in the spirit of community rather than competition,” said Branson, whose photograph depicts a mother and daughter. The image was taken at Redwood Roots Farm.

“The mother-daughter relationship has been a central theme for my life,” she said. “My greatest challenge has been coping with a difficult relationship with my own mother, and my greatest joy has been building a beautiful relationship with a daughter of my own. I loved photographing Jada with her sweet baby girl. I chose this image because I feel joy, tenderness, and connection when I look at it. It communicates the beauty of the mother-daughter connection that I wanted to celebrate.”

In addition to being a photographer, Branson works part time as a child therapist.

“I specialize in attachment and strengthening the parent-child relationship,” she said. “Photography has become a wonderful creative outlet for me, and way to balance out what can sometimes be a challenging, yet meaningful, career. I love to focus on capturing authentic emotion, meaningful connections and beautiful moments for families and couples in the many gorgeous outdoor locations around our community.”

Amber Ferriman decided to participate in the Humboldt Traveling Dress project because she wanted a chance to get to know some of the other local photographers.

“It was a nice way to bond with them and to feel like part of a community,” said Ferriman, who used her best friend, Leslie Marshall, as a model for her image.

“She is my muse. Whenever a vision for a photograph pops into my mind, I call her up and she models for me,” Ferriman said. “We’ve really formed a creative collaboration over the years and it’s been a fun outlet for the both of us. The idea for the photo was sort of a ‘Princess in the Woods’ theme. I loved the idea of a pretty lady in a dress in the middle of a dark and foggy forest. The fog was created with a smoke bomb.”

She added: “I liked getting to see everyone’s vision for the dress. I love the way our photographs have a common thread, but are all unique.”

Ferriman, of Fieldbrook, taught herself photography about seven years ago after her son left home for college.

“It’s been a fun hobby and creative outlet for me,” she said. “I’ve gotten to create and photograph calendars for a local animal rescue and share my love of photography for a cause I really believe in.”

Darci Dalton of McKinleyville chose to get involved in the project because, she said, “It just seemed like too much fun to pass up.”

“I immediately pictured the model I chose when I started thinking about the dress,” Dalton said. “The location was this magical spot I had recently used and everything just fell into place. The person in my photo is a very dear friend of mine who doesn’t see just how beautiful she is. I think this project helped her see herself in a different light.”

Dalton says she originally took up photography more than six years ago to capture good images of her children.

“Then,” she said, “people started asking me to take pictures of their kids and it grew from there.”

Images from the Humboldt Traveling Dress project are on view in December at Old Town Coffee & Chocolates, 211 F St., in Eureka.
