“Most customers order their dresses six to eight months ahead,” says Van Hell, who is advising her customers to think even more into the future, perhaps ordering from eight months to a year in advance.
Not that she doesn’t feel for those whose wedding dress plans are being derailed by a virus: “When I was planning my wedding, the dress was very important,” she says, noting her passion today is helping other women find that perfect wedding dress. “Still, when I look back on that day, there were so many other memorable details — and even more important, we just celebrated our 25th anniversary.”
Getting their chosen dress isn’t the only hurdle brides-to-be and their prospective grooms are facing due to the pandemic. Plans for destination weddings and large guest lists have been thrown into disarray with travel bans and social distance directives issued, along with a mandate that no gathering can include more than 50 people.
Alexandra Slawec says, however, that a trend towards simpler weddings is an answer.
“The minimalist wedding is more popular these days; young couples are much more frugal than previous generations,” says Slawec, who runs her own wedding planning company, Boutiq Weddings and Events. “Also, most weddings are in the summer, so I think people are staying calm for now.”
