BETHLEHEM, PA - Shopping for prom can be tight on the purse strings, which is why the Lehigh Valley YWCA started up this annual dress drive, where girls can find that perfect dress, without ever having to worry about the price tag.
The girls can pick out a dress, shoes, and a purse all for 15 dollars. "All of it [the dresses and accessories] come to us through donations," prom committee chair Joy Albanese explained. "We do dress drives across the Lehigh Valley, we have bridal shops that actually who donate brand new dresses."
This is a luxury for girls, who otherwise, couldn't afford it. "I know a lot of my friends have spent a ridiculous amount of money on prom dresses and I've found ones that I really like for a really special day for a good price," senior Ava Sweeney said.
"It's actually really amazing," junior Jenna Horn said.
This spring marks Jenna Horn's second prom and this weekend, is her second time picking out a dress at this event. "It's like a navy blue has like floral on the chest and leading down to the bottom like a gradient, it's beautiful," Horn said, holding up her dress.
"The dresses that they get are actually beautiful in wonderful shape," Horn's mom, Shawn Coco said.
Shawn said this event is about more than just shopping. For her, it's about creating memories with her daughter.
"I get to experience that joy in her face when she finds that dress that she wants and not only my daughter but I get to experience that with the other daughters as well," Coco said. "I love being a part of this."
