Angie’s Closet in Superior recently donated 30 formal dresses to Superior High School. They will be provided free to students who may not otherwise have a gown for the event.
Angie Kiminski, owner of the consignment shop, said she noticed many students come in to buy formal dresses for the Fall Ball and Prom. She reached out to Family Services Program Coordinator Nicky Wilson to donate some for this year’s event.
“Students want something beautiful to wear and have fun in,” Kiminski said. “As a small business owner, the community (members) are my customers. They help me, and I’m happy I can help in return.”
SHS doesn’t have a large dress shop for students like it did a decade ago, Wilson said, but the school has provided dresses to students in need for the past several years.
Anyone who wants to donate formal dresses for students in need can drop them off at the high school's main office.
If the Dress Fits, a Minnesota-based nonprofit organization, is also accepting donations of formal dresses at Blue Arrow Boutique in Superior and Bella Rose Bridal in Duluth. The organization will host its fifth annual free prom dress giveaway March 15-16 at Bella Rose. Students from Douglas County schools are welcome to attend and find a dress that’s the perfect fit. No proof of financial hardship is needed, according to organizers. Anyone who couldn’t otherwise afford a prom dress is invited to attend.
Clothes closets
Both Superior High School and Superior Middle School provide less formal clothing to students on a regular basis. The middle school clothing closet has been available to students since the 2008-09 school year; the high school clothing closet launched during the 2010-11 school year.
“Both closets are used by many students during the year,” Wilson said.
The district collects new or lightly-used age-appropriate clothing for both schools. Other items needed include underclothes, socks, winter coats, hats, mittens, gloves, shoes, boots, school supplies and hygiene items.
“There is a continuous need for hygiene products like deodorant, shampoo and toothpaste,” Wilson said.
Items for either of the closets can be dropped off at the respective school's main office. More information is available through the school district website or by contacting Wilson at nicky.wilson@superior.k12.wi.us.
