For those who dare to go commando, there’s a new go-to label in town. Behold: the clingy dresses of French brand Marcia, which allow no room for VPL (“visible panty line”), or even a whisper of floss-thin thong strap. The curve-hugging dresses all feature the risqué Marcia signature: a sassy helix-style side cut-out—often lined in leather or bedazzled—running from the hem all the way up to under the arm. Created by Paris-based designer Emma Reynaud, Marcia’s maxim is delightfully French: “Everything is made in France, oui oui. The design is carefully studied to sculpt your body and make you boom boom, too.” Whatever that secret “boom boom” ingredient is, it’s working: The label has caught the eye of the French style set, including actress Adèle Exarchopoulos, who wore the dress in a blue tie-dye version.
Reynaud launched the label in June 2018, based on the idea of what she believed both herself and her friends would want to wear. “My group of girlfriends became both my first clients, as well as a great source of inspiration,” she says. Reynaud, who has had various stints working in the fashion industry, launched Marcia after having her second child. “It was the desire to make clothes that would be sexy and easy to wear at the same time,” she adds. “I wanted my first dress to be more suggestive than revealing, a dress that would make you feel both powerful and daring. The first one I came up with had a very simple design with kimono sleeves and open slits on both sides.” Currently, there are 24 options, including a black version (titled “Taxi Girl”) with cut-outs bonded by Swarovski gems; a floral print incarnation that appears lifted from a tapestry; and a classically sexy leopard print style.
