The Dress Princess Diana Wore to Dance with John Travolta Just Sold for $290,000 - TownandCountrymag.com

Princess Diana’s dance with John Travolta at the White House in November of 1985 is still remembered as one of the late princess’s standout fashion moments. And now the midnight-blue dress that she wore on the dance floor has found its way back to her former home Kensington Palace.

The Victor Edelstein gown will now be part of the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection after being bought by independent charity Historic Royal Palaces, who care for the collection, for £220,000 ($290,000). The sale was a post-auction purchase after the item, surprisingly, failed to find a buyer when it went under the hammer with Kerry Taylor auctions on Monday, December 9. The dress collection, which includes around 10,000 items from the 16th century to the present, is not run by the royal household, but many of its gowns go on show in royal residences during exhibitions. The items are stored at either Hampton Court or Kensington Palace, and this particular gown is likely to appear in a future exhibition at Kensington.

Curator Eleri Lynn described the dress as representing a “key moment in the story of twentieth century royal fashion.”

She added: “We’re delighted to have acquired this iconic evening gown for the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection—a designated collection of national and international importance—over twenty years since it first left Kensington Palace...The photographs of Diana, Princess of Wales dancing with John Travolta at the White House wearing this midnight blue Victor Edelstein gown are known the world over, with the dress’s twirling velvet skirt playing no small part in making this such a memorable image.”

In addition to the White House dinner hosted by President Reagan, the dress was worn by the Princess for official visits to Austria in 1986 and Germany in 1987, to attend the London premiere of the film ‘Wall Street’ in 1988, and to sit for an official portrait by the artist Israel Zohar, in her capacity as Colonel in Chief of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (a cavalry regiment of the British Army).

The Princess wore the gown for the last time in 1997, when she was photographed by Lord Snowdon in advance of the dress going up for sale. She auctioned the gown in June 1997 as one of 79 outfits to raise money for charity. It was sold again in 2013 before finding its way to auction on Monday.

Other dresses sold by Kerry Taylor this week included a Katherine Cusack gown Diana wore to the Royal Academy of Music in 1986 that fetched £48,000. A Catherine Walker day dress also sold for £28,000. The auctioneer described the sales as “a testament to the enduring fascination with the late Princess Diana, who it seems is still the People's Princess.”
