Here's where traffic congestion could occur during Red Dress Run weekend - NOLA.com

The second weekend of August is filled with ongoing roadwork projects, but there are also events like the annual Red Dress Run in New Orleans. Here are the traffic hotspots to watch out for.

Esplanade Avenue in the French Quarter

This year's Red Dress Run begins Saturday (Aug. 12) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., beginning at Crescent Park. NOLA.com | The Times-Picyune's Doug MacCash reported Aug. 9 that 3,000 participants are expected to show up.

The event will have a new route this year that "will start at Crescent Park, head down Esplanade and into the Quarter briefly, then go back to Crescent Park," according to spokesperson Patty Patterson.

200-1000 blocks of Royal Street

Dirty Linen Night also begins Saturday, and crowds are expected to fill the 200-1000 blocks of Royal Street from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway

Causeway officials say the left lane on a portion of the south shore-bound span will be closed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Bourbon Street

The lake-bound side of Canal Street between Dorsiere and Bourbon Streets has been reduced to one lane since Thursday, as Hard Rock Construction continues work on a French Quarter infrastructure project. Construction is present on the first four blocks of Bourbon, and Entergy is performing electrical work on the 500 block.

Iberville Street at Bourbon continues to be closed as well as crews install new underground utilities, city officials stated. Drivers may use Decatur and North Rampart streets as alternate routes to Bourbon Street.

Canal Street (downtown)

Canal Street downtown is also reduced to two lanes for traffic between Exchange Place and Bourbon Street. Poydras Street can be used as an alternate route to Canal Street. Officials stated the Bourbon Street project will be completed in December.

Canal Street and City Park Avenue

Construction work has begun on a major project to extend the streetcar line. Through the end of August, the following changes closures will be in effect:

  • Two lanes of downtown bound traffic towards Canal Street will remain open on City Park Avenue between the I-10 Service Rd. and Canal Street
  • No eastbound through traffic lanes will be available on City Park Avenue between the I-10 Service Road and Canal Street
  • No lake bound through traffic lanes will be available on Canal Street beyond the intersection of North Anthony and Canal Street
  • No westbound through traffic lanes will be available on City Park Avenue beyond the intersection of Bienville Street and City Park Avenue
  • No downtown bound through traffic lanes will be available on Canal Blvd beyond the intersection of Canal Boulevard and Rosedale Street

Michoud Boulevard

Drivers are unable to use Michoud Boulevard between Chef Menteur Highway and Dwyer Road in New Orleans East as contractors Cycle Construction Co. repave the roadway in concrete between the Michoud Bridge and Dwyer Road. City officials said the project will end in summer 2018.

Crews are also repaving the roadway in asphalt from the Michoud Bridge to Chef Menteur Highway, installing new sidewalks and intersection curb ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and striping with high-visibility crosswalks. The existing water, sewer and drainage lines will also get replaced.

Wisner Boulevard

Work to replace the Wisner Bridge also continues. The bridge spans Interstate 610 on Wisner Boulevard at City Park. Riverbound traffic on Wisner is being detoured onto Harrison Avenue and Marconi Drive. The Department of Transportation and Development said the bridge will be complete Sept. 30.

South Galvez Street

Also ongoing is a $5.4 million reconstruction project along the stretch of South Galvez Street from Toledano Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Westbound traffic along the Central City thoroughfare has been detoured to South Broad Street and South Claiborne Avenue for five more months, officials said.

Fleur De Lis Drive

Command Construction Industries has nearly completed installing the water line in the northbound travel lane on Fleur De Lis Drive between 30th Street and Old Hammond Highway in the West End area. A closure of the northbound travel lane on Fleur De Lis is in effect as two-way traffic is diverted onto the southbound travel lane.

West Esplanade Avenue

In Jefferson Parish, West Esplanade Avenue between Ridgelake Drive and North Labarre Road will be closed until Aug. 17. Parish spokeswoman Rhonda Collins said one eastbound lane of West Esplanade will close during the work. The closures will give the C. Bud Taulli construction company time to repair a collapsed canal bank at the cost of $50,000.
