PRINCETON — High school prom season is still three months away, but it’s not too early to begin thinking about what to wear to the dance.
There will be plenty of options to choose from at this year’s annual PROMise Sale to be held in Cushing Hall at First United Methodist Church in Princeton.
The two-day sale will be from 5 to 7 p.m. March 13 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 14.
All new or gently-used dresses will be priced at $50 or less. Accessories and shoes will also be available for sale.
Not going to prom, but need a dress? The sale offers dresses of all shapes and sizes. There are long, formal gowns, short dresses, mother-of-the-bride dresses, eighth-grade dance dresses and many more.
Changing rooms will be available for try-on before purchasing.
Sale coordinator Kelly Davis said this sale provides an opportunity for everyone going to prom to have a dress by offering them at an affordable price. She said it also gives people the chance to spend their hard-earned money wisely.
With the cost of new prom dresses being so expensive these days, this sale gives an opportunity for those who don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a dress they might only wear once.
Davis said this sale also encourages people to clean out their closets and donate what they may never wear again. The sale is currently accepting dress donations at the church, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Davis said donations are tax deductible.
The PROMise Sale was started seven years ago by Amy Thompson, who wanted to provide girls the opportunity to buy an affordable dress for prom. She recognized the need and burden for some to purchase brand-new dresses at unaffordable prices.
Every year the sale grew larger and sold hundreds of dresses. All proceeds of the sales went back into the community to support the local youths.
This year, Thompson made the decision to step back from the sale as she pursued other missions. She said passing the sale on was not a decision she took lightly, but through lots of prayer and thought, she concluded it was time to step down.
“Life is busy, and I wanted to be able to enjoy it with my family. I have done the PROMise Sale for seven years, and oddly I consider it my baby. It was an idea that God put into my head while washing dishes. ... Being a mom of two boys and creating a project as large as the PROMise Sale is completely out of my comfort zone, but I listened, and here we are,” Thompson said.
“I am grateful to all of the people who helped and supported me.”
The First United Methodist Church youth group, which is led by Davis, will be taking over the sale.
“Kelly and the youth will do a fantastic job, and I know that they will bring energy to the PROMise Sale that will make it better than ever,” Thompson said.
Davis acknowledged all of Thompson’s work over the years and said this mission has fulfilled a need.
“The sale is definitely an asset to the community,” she said.
This year’s proceeds of the sale will benefit First United Methodist Church’s youth group mission trips and outreach.
