Atlanta Prom Dress Drive Once Upon A Prom Celebrates Year Two - Atlanta, GA Patch

ATLANTA, GA — The Taylor Made Foundation's "Once Upon a Prom Dress Drive" is collecting gently used prom dresses, shoes and accessories to distribute at their second annual event this spring. Founder and executive director Darnell Taylor said that they'll be accepting donations through February 29th to assist underprivileged 2020 prom-goers in metro Atlanta. Registration for the "Boutique Day of Empowerment" is open now through Feb. 1.

The organization is seeking gently used, trendy formal dresses, shoes, handbags, shawls, jewelry, and other accessories. If anyone would like to make a monetary or gift card donation for a prom related service, they can visit the organization's website or contact Taylor by email at info@taylormadefoundation.com. Donations are tax-deductible.

The March 7th event is invitation only and participants must be referred by a guidance counselor, teacher or religious representative. The big day will consist of motivational speaking, live hair and makeup demonstrations, giveaways, and more. The young women will also receive assistance from who Taylor calls "fairy prom mothers," professional women volunteers who have offered to do more than hand out dresses.

"They are really loving and kind and we picked them because they will be able to speak life and love to these girls," said Taylor. "'You're so beautiful, that dress looks so beautiful on you;' we want to make these girls feel special inside and beyond prom."

Although this is the second year for the "Once Upon a Prom Dress Drive," Taylor said this upcoming event is on a much larger scale. Last year she was able to sponsor two young women, providing them with a custom shopping experience. After an outpouring of requests for help after the deadline, Taylor said she decided to begin strategizing on how to impact more girls and attract sponsors.

"You wouldn't believe how many girls came out of the woodworks, asking for our help and so we really wanted to do it differently this year and open it to more girls," she said. "That was the inspiration behind this, that and I was never able to go to my own prom."

Due to a complicated family situation, Taylor said that she was put out of her home during her senior year of high school, while living in New York City.

"I guess you could say I was homeless," she said. "Being out in the streets, prom wasn't even a thought in my mind. I was in survival mode."

Taylor did, however, attend her graduation, she said, but only thanks to a friend who bought her a dress and paid for her hair to be professionally styled.

Now, at 51, almost 52, she said she still longs for the one night she'll never get back. Her way of dealing with that disappointment is by pouring her love and energy into helping other young women attend, making it a special night they'll always remember.

The students who are participating in the Boutique Day of Empowerment come from homeless shelters, foster care and disadvantaged families, who may not be able to support them financially for prom night.

The "fairy prom mothers" will be there to not only encourage them, but to give them hope, said Taylor.

"We thought it was important to have [women] who would be there for them and let them know that their situation may be what it is now, but that they have their whole future in front of them," said Taylor. "They have a whole village of women who are here to support and show that they can grow beyond their current circumstances."

To date, t2he Taylor Foundation has received or will be receiving donations and/or services from the following businesses:

Estee Lauder, Thrive Causemetics, Uline, Nairobi Professionals, TGIN, Outbacks, Chili's Covington, Chili's Conyers, LongHorn Covington, LongHorn Conyers, Conyers Flower Shop, Lancome, Sephora, Dream Beauty Studios, Rachelle's Creative Dishes, AD Beauty & Hair, Sweet Creations by B, Bridal Sense, Bella Bridesmaid, Encore Formals & Bridal, Formally Yours, Zee Wilds Hair, House of Masters ATL, J&R Beauty/Barber Salon, Master Faders, Salon Max, Younique Products, Belle J Images, Yancy Milan, Flavored Bling, Paparazzi, Cindy's Nails, Lush Nail Bar, TNT Platinum Events, Hustletopia, and Newton High School.
