Everyone loves a bargain. This week’s story is from Caroline S. Tetschner, a teacher who lives in Virginia Beach.
What: Dress for a recital
Where found: Family Thrift Center on Wesleyan Drive in Virginia Beach
Cost: about $2
What makes it special: My daughter, Abigail Fedorowicz, recently had her final middle school concert — a bittersweet event. A few days prior to the concert, her chorus director said all eighth-graders need to wear a black or mostly black outfit for the performance. Not long before, I had spent some good money for another performing arts need, and decided we should revisit one of my favorite places, our local thrift store. My 14-year-old makes some money from local acting gigs, allowance and babysitting, and she loves to shop. I encouraged her to check out our thrift store first. “Mom, they never have anything!” was the reply. So I made a deal. I would pay for the dress if purchased at the thrift store and she could pay if we went to the mall. Amazing what a little incentive can do: 10 minutes after checking out our local thrift store first, we walked out with this $1.98 find! It was marked down from $5.98.
