When Alfred Angelo recently closed its doors in bankruptcy, an Enid store used social media to reach out and help brides worldwide with finding their wedding gowns.
"Any brides that had any dresses in (Alfred Angelo) stores or on order, or anything, couldn't get their dresses. They literally closed their doors. And no one knew. We are a wholesaler with them, so we are a dealer of Alfred Angelo. We carried Alfred Angelo in our store, too, so it affected directly even some of the Enid brides that had Alfred Angelo stuff on order," said Staci Gober, owner of The Bridal Shop in downtown Enid.
Through several Facebook pages, The Bridal Shop has been able to help brides find Alfred Angelo dresses like they had previously ordered.
"We have shipped dresses anywhere from New Jersey to Burbank, California," Gober said.
Last week, the store sold a dress to a woman in New Zealand, she said.
"That was our big, oh my gosh. That was fun," Gober said.
The woman had ordered a dress in New Zealand, but the shop closed with the bankruptcy. She was able to get the same dress from Enid — shipping was $80, and the dress should arrive in 10 days, Gober said.
The Bridal Shop has offered the brides half off of the dresses.
"It's just a cruddy deal for them. Cruddy deal for us too, for any of our girls that had stuff on order that had to re-find stuff too. It's one thing if you find a shirt that you love, it's a shirt, but your wedding dress is your wedding dress," she said.
The brides got an email about the closure of Alfred Angelo.
"Basically they are just out. They're out the money, they're out their dress and (Alfred Angelo) filed bankruptcy, so I think eventually they can try and recoup their money," Gober said. "But, you know, it doesn't help them with their wedding dress, especially like these girls if their weddings are coming up in the next couple of months. You can't go order a wedding gown and expect it to be here next week. It doesn't work like that."
The Enid store has sold 20 to 25 Alfred Angelo dresses since July 20 — six wedding gowns, and the rest bridesmaid dresses.
"The Internet girls, they'll take a dress even if it's close to their size — 'cause it's their dream dress and so if we have it in a 10 and they need a 12, they're having it altered," she said. "These poor girls, you just feel for them. Some of these girls picked their dress, it's been on order for four or five months. A lot of these girls are still finding out that Alfred Angelo's doors are closed."
One woman was crying, she was so excited, when she found out The Bridal Shop had her dress design, Gober said.
"She called me the goddess of the year, or something like that," MaKenzie Jones, who has handled networking with brides on Facebook, said. "She literally posted a picture of herself on this page, with my 600 other comments, that she is crying at work."
